This project consists of four stages. Each stage will focus on a particular issue of concern, and it will explore that issue throaugh charts and visual data presentations. This report is the output of the first stage and it is dedicated for those data and documents obtained with regard to gender issues. The three other issues will be discussed in the upcoming reports as part of this project.

This project aims at exploring the weight given to a particular issue of concern in the media coverage in Kurdistan. By the weight attached to a particular issue we mean the extent to which the media outlet numerically repeats the issue in its news coverage and the ranking of that coverage relative to other topics of interest. This is applied to TV, radio, newspapers and electronic media outlets and broadcasts.

It is clear that the media outlets, air those topics and news that are of interest to the receiver. The question here is whether the receiver could potentially determine the coverage of specific news by the media outlets through the receivers' selective interest in those news and pieces. Or it is the media outlets that can maintain a balance in their coverage and remain neutral to all viewers and receivers. This is relevant given the interdependencies of the social, political, economic and cultural issues and the potential of each and every media outlet to identify its areas of interest within that matrix of issues.

For example, if a media outlet focuses exclusively on political issues and news, it nevertheless, cannot ignore the other areas and topics of interest due to the interdependencies among politics and other aspects of society..
